If one word could describe my art it would be COLOR! Vibrant, bold color is what sparks my creativity. Inspired by the materials, I have given my heart to two practices. Although very different specialities my encaustic wax paintings and my watercolors on Yupo do have commonalities. They are anchored by color! Both mediums permit transparency, are fluid and exude a sense of movement. These common elements enable me to integrate painting and collage while allowing for the element of surprise in both.
My watercolor paintings were inspired by the colors, sounds and textures of the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Mexico. I want the viewer to be transported there in their mind and spirit.

Encaustic is a versatile medium that permits transparency, translucency, or opacity. It can be smooth or dimensional and the wax surface can be stamped, gouged, or carved. With almost limitless possibilities I am able to experiment with building layers of color to create incredibly brilliant backgrounds.

Considering herself a "creative colorist", Susan Hess' work reveals her passion for vibrant color and texture. Her bold use of bright colors and fluid strokes convey the energy behind each piece.
Born in Pittsburg, Pa. Ms. Hess began her artistic journey at the age of 9 when she created her own colors by melting together the crayons from "the big box" of Crayolas. She attended Marywood College and graduated with a BA in Art and Interior Design. Working for 25 years as an interior designer, she continued her fascination with color through her use of paint and fabrics. She developed her artistic skills in workshops and classes with national and international artists.
A resident of Madeira Beach, Florida for over 20 years she creates interpretive impressions of people, places, and nature. The interaction of colors and surface in her watercolors creates spontaneous paintings with a life all their own. When working abstractly Susan experiments with papers, printing, wax and found objects. Her encaustic wax paintings combines the spontaneity of colors, the textures of collage, and the flow of watercolors making it the ideal medium for her new work.

Tom and Marcia
"We love the bright colors and our painting has a prominent place right over the sofa. It was commissioned and even titled especially for us"
Tim, Kim, and Frank
"We have always admired Susan's work and own several of her pieces. Victoria was made from actual pieces of paper found on her trip to San Miguel, Mexico. It is truly unique and glimmers depending on the light."
Chuck and Nancy
"We have three of Susan's paintings and love their colors. This painting of grapevines is one of our favorites and works perfectly in our breakfast area."
Laurie and Trent:
"My "Red Hot Welcome" pineapple watercolor by Susan gets compliments from everyone who comes in my front door".
